CV/Resume & Website plan

I’ve found that I have created several different resumes based on my needs. Now, as I solidify my title as a filmmaker, I need to make tweaks to reflect it, namely listing written works (both produced and unproduced), film credits, film screenings, awards, etc. Regarding a website, I’ve used Wix before to create one from scratch, which was very user-friendly, but I noticed a few classmates mentioned WordPress; I definitely want to look more into that. For me, one of the most important elements of a website is the first impression it makes to a person who visits (with the scientifically-proven shortened attention of today’s audience, it’s important to keep them on the page!) It should be aesthetically pleasing and the layout should be organized and easy to navigate. I’m excited to start one now that I have content to showcase. On my to-do list as well is to design and order business cards and (maybe) start using an Instagram account. Not crazy about the latter because I’m not a big fan of posting on social media (although I know I need to get over myself). This is a great assignment though because it gets us thinking about the “real world” of filmmaking as a career and the self-promotion one has to do when just starting out. No pain, no gain, right?

  1. Perhaps social media platforms--no matter which ones you use--are ones you post to when you have something to say or promote. Nothing wrong with doing it that way, right? Then, when you post, people pay attention because you don't post mindlessly. You post with purpose. There are folks I pay attention to more because their content has purpose every time. Does that make sense? I may be moving into my comfort zone of perpetual optimist, but I wonder if it's not a getting over yourself but bringing your authentic self no matter where you present it. Does that make sense? If you don't like posting, you don't like posting. There are many ways to reach people than social media. Sometimes, to me, social media feels like flyers tucked under windshield wipers and I scroll thinking, "Ugh. I didn't ask for this." lol. But purposeful content--even in flyers under my windshield or on a timeline--is likely well received.

  2. I agree that this assignment is a good way for us to start thinking of developing ourselves as filmmakers outside of the graduate program. It sounds like you have a good idea of the purpose you want your website to serve. You talked a little bit about the aesthetics of your site, Do you inspiration for what you may want it to look like?
