Jacob's Presentation:
Barbara Hammer
I love the way Hammer’s films focused on her life experiences and perspectives, or as Jacob said, “what she took in the world and reflected back.” Whether it was looking at the female form and lesbian lovemaking or her experience dying from ovarian cancer. Her films were her truth, and that’s admirable. While watching the clips, I was also intrigued by her techniques of blending images with superimposition and enchanted by her music choices. These artistic choices complimented her quest to observe the female body that was different from the norm of the day. And kudos to her for coming into film “late” and making her mark.
Sabine Gruffat:
What I appreciate about Sabine is when Jacob mentioned that she created a variety of different films trying to figure out what she wanted to do. I can totally relate to that. I started out only wanting to make narrative films, but now I find myself looking for ways to incorporate experimental elements in them. She seems like she’s an incredibly creative person, and how cool is it that she’s teaching at UNC! Although not a film, I really like her “Headlines” photography piece, and I’d love to do something similar to that right here in Wilmington. What a cool idea!
Yes! The "Headlines" photography is excellent!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree Kim! The way Hammer shared her personal truths through her work is nothing less than admirable.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I love that Sabine allowed herself to wander through a lot of different modes/styles/etc... as she found her voice and place.
ReplyDeleteI'm betting you have a list like this for your other classes too. Drop them in here together so we can see the full map!
